Faster Would Be Better
Before the jokes about how to kill me started last night, (I was actually asked by someone if I enjoyed them this morning – I didn’t bother to go back and read them as it says more about them than me.)…
Yesterday I raised concerns over the Kurt Bills’ campaign rollout. I’m sorry, but I was hoping that the CYA pre-convention “don’t worry we’ll be inheriting the Ron Paul Presidential support and donors” thing was not the actual plan but instead lip service to his base to prove it was just get the endorsement and then we’ll pivot to a general election strategy…. Well Mike Osskopp is still saying that, so it is the actual plan.
Then there is the belief by some Ron Paul supporters that Ron Paul is actually leading the Delegate count so the help Bills is waiting for will never come.
Lots of people like to joke about how I’m unstable and not helping. It was one of Ron Carey and Tony Sutton’s best defenses for criticism I raised of them…. How’d that thinking I’m crazy just because you don’t like what I am saying work out for the Party?
Well, if Bills’ camp informs his supporters that its over and that Mitt Romney is the actual nominee now that Ron Paul couldn’t even carry his home county in Texas(????), Bills may lose supporters here in MN and be even more hosed since the Ron Paul camp has already alienated a ton of long time activists and leaders.
Plus there is the glass jaw that I saw on the campaign trail and hoped would be dealt with post endorsement but before the public rollout. It clearly was not. This is the deal where Bills is asked a question, gives a boilerplate Ron Paul-esque response, and when asked to explain the details or explain the effects, gets defensive and flustered. I’d hoped there would be serious work on messaging and a focus on IDing himself, not letting the DFL friendly media paint him as the extreme radical that even the establishment Republicans couldn’t take…… (Look, you ran or were part of the purity purge, the media noticed that with out me even saying one dang word, all eyes are on you.)
Its easy to win an endorsement, especially with a large portion of the people who simply want lip service paid to them. The Pro-life crowd is the same so please don’t think I’m singling Ron Paulers out here. There are factions in each party like that, its just the Ron Paul campaign is a new block or association that is well organized and in some cases has no intentions of helping the Republican party so its a serious concern for people like me that want to hold majorities, at least 4 Congressional races, pass the amendments, AND beat Klobuchar. All to set the table for knocking Dayton and the rest of the Statewide Democrats lose in 2014.
I want you to be better Kurt Bills. You are the nominee. You are the defacto face of our party now as our statewide candidate this cycle. This means a lot of us are counting on you and from time to time, we will get upset. Its going to happen again, and trust me, its not going to be nearly as bad as what the Democrats and friends in the media will do and say about you. So grow some skin, find a strong footing, and get your campaign up to speed.
In one day, with out my help the press got their talking points and labeled you. These are not Hegseth talking points. These are the same things they say about every Republican, moderate to rock ribbed conservative. And you came right out and said them.
MPR’s Polinaut: “Bills also said he favors cutting several state agencies and foreign aid and is willing toraise the retirement age for Social Security.”
I’d hoped someone had figured out how to finally market the on Paul message to the masses if you were so confident that you’d walk away with the endorsement….I mean, if you were so confident of the Delegate count, you could have worked on this well before May 18th and been ready for the pushback from the press.
I guess I was wrong. Its not that I disagree with raising retirement age (but should be termed more like -> raising the age you can start collecting SS benefits but that you can retire on your own dime any time you want….) Its that I know the press will ID you, but more importantly all of us Republicans, with it. I can see the ads already from Klobuchar, that you want to throw old people into snow banks….
Get better and get better yesterday. If the top of our ticket is a dud, that means no national support. That means our already weak party (thanks again Sutton/Brodkorb/Carey) will have no reinforcements and that the tens of millions spent by Dayton, Obama, and the unions to retake the Legislatures, defeat the Amendments, reelect Klobuchar, and beat Cravaak will go unmatched.
Get better Bills. Faster would be better. Not for me, but for us all. With power comes great responsibility.
Look, you don’t get to run a revolution calling everyone else wrong and the problem, casting blame wide and far, and then expect no one to have an opinion of your own missteps right out of the gate. There is no honeymoon here. There is no grace period. You and your Ron Paul base made one hell of a scene and right now everyone is watching your every move. There is no wiggle room, no learning curve, or second chances.
This is the big leagues. The next 5 months are your final exam. Its go time. Get better.
I’m sorry but if the winning strategy of Bills and Team Wiberty was to not have anyone say anything about weaknesses – holy hannah!

Test
I agree with Bills election being a chance for them to show something.
But of course when they lose, it will be all your fault for not supporting them.
Take a look at Ron Paul. It is the party, it is the media it is …
Everyone else is to blame for him losing.
Same here.
The headline will read – “Bill lost because establishment worked against him”
Also, tried to post earlier but when you were passing out blame for the financial issues with the party I noticed you went all the way back to TPaw but conveniently left out the disastrous campaign that ran up most of the bills. Emmer campaign and recount have a lot to do with the deficit and also was the beginning of the large donor withdrawal.
Not that the others are not to blame, but if we are going to pass around blame, all those need to own up to their contribution.
Point taken on debt, but you can’t blame Emmer for Sutton hiring a terrible lawyer who over charges. Lots of things lead to this, Phoenix, bloated and possibly ineffective staff, misplaced priorities, etc etc.
And counter-point taken.
I am curious how much overlap there is with Emmer campaign staff and Bills.
Emmer had some good folks but also folks who thought that the message was so great that votes would just fall at his feet. I saw some of that arrogance in Bills campaign so worry we may be in for round 2.
Andy,
You need to get over it. Here you are being divisive
in holding out for competence from our senatorial candidate.
It’s about liberty. Just say liberty a lot and you create
more of it. Or something. It’s also enough to beat Amy Klobuchar.
Take the red pill.
